Red River Gorge

The following are a few of the places that inspired me to write the Journeys Of The Crew series.

Red River Gorge

Red River Gorge Natural Land Bridge
The Red River Gorge is a fun little spot tucked away in the eastern portion of Kentucky.

DESCRIPTION:

There are an estimated 150 arches in the Red River Gorge. This is second only to Arches National Park in Utah. Overnight permits are required and can be purchased at many local stores in the area.

Insider Hint: There are some very nice rock jumps that won't be found on any official map. ;-)

CAVES/OVERHANGS:
Red River Gorge Cave

Throughout the Gorge you will find MANY caves and overhangs. Do take caution in and around these areas.

Also, be aware that campfires are not permitted within 100 feet of any cave, overhang or rock-shelter.

Note: Be aware of current policy on cave entrance. The last time I was there, entering caves was not permitted due to efforts in preventing the spread of white-nose syndrome in the bat population.

BEARS:
Guess what, a bear can run up to ~30 mph; you can't. Be smart. Be prepared. There are many ways to avoid contact with bears.

One of the best ways to avoid contact with bears is to not hike or camp alone. More people equals more noise, smells and activity all of which will aid in deterring bears from approaching the area you are in. Hopefully, and more than likely, you will never see the bear(s) as your group's presence will have the bear headed in a different direction long before you ever knew it was there.
